Crochet isn’t for the birds

Hooks and needles have been around immeasurably longer than any evidence of either being used in the production of looped fabric, and looping without tools all but certainly predates the use of any such implements for that craft. In fact, there’s no way even to determine if our species was the first to figure out how to do any of this.

Tailorbirds know how to draw loose fiber into thread and sew with it.

Weaverbirds know how to gather uniform strips of vegetable fiber and loop and weave them into shaped structures.

A slender pointed beak that can both pierce and grasp is remarkably well suited to the sewing and looping seen here. It is also useful for converting a needle into a hook when needed.

From the perspective of sewing-tool design, the dual-purpose awl and tweezers provided by a beak is a more precise implement than the functionally equivalent index finger and opposable thumb on a human hand. There is no reason to assume that these birds developed their needlecraft and toolmaking skills before we started doing similar things but Homo sapiens can’t even claim credit for the oldest known eyed needle.

It’s a fair guess that this needle was used to pierce fabric and pull some kind of fiber through the resulting hole but that doesn’t preclude similar action at the site of the needle’s manufacture or elsewhere with other tools. It would be more of a stretch to see the needle as evidence of tool-based looping but at some point eyed needles clearly did come into use for that purpose.

There is an obvious upshot to all this. Just as there are several basic looped structures that can readily be made without tools and are seen as universal constructs, appearing independently at uncountable times and places, a battery of ubiquitous tools has been available throughout to ease and extend the production and design of looped fabric. However much local applications might diverge and whatever degree of specialized complexity a craft might ultimately acquire, at least in principle, all can be traced back to one or more elements of the same initial set of structures and tools.

In the largest number of cases, the appearance of similar techniques at widely separated times and locations is therefore best treated as coincidental. However, there are situations where corroborating evidence indicates cultural cross-pollination, if not the outright transfer of technology. One possible such occurrence can be seen in previous posts about the parallels between Egyptian yarncraft and Viking wirecraft, with tubular knitting appearing in each. A similar parallel is found in the looped yarncraft of the two regions.

The eyed needle was used by both communities when working with yarn but the only evidence of a hook used with that material is Egyptian, assuming the practice of  knitting on a peg loom. The Vikings similarly appear likely to have used a hook for knitting wire but, again, there is no indication of their having used such tools to work yarn. That technique does appear in Northern Europe far later as “shepherd’s knitting” (the basic form of what is now called slip stitch crochet), where it is believed to have developed over an indeterminate period for producing the types of warm utilitarian garments that were also made in the same region by nalbinding.

However, there is at least one instance of shepherd’s knitting in archaeologically recovered material claimed to be from Coptic Egypt. If that provenance is accepted, it raises a few interesting questions. It is entirely possible that the object is simply an isolated occurrence of a fairly obvious method of looping that would become commonplace at a significantly later date, both in North Africa and Northern Europe. On the other hand, if the parallels between the looping techniques in those two regions are a result of cultural interaction — of which there is otherwise ample evidence — it may be possible that the use of a hook to make crochet-type structures was communicated via those channels. I’ll get into the details of this by describing the Coptic object in a subsequent post.

Early Irish knitting

Knitted silver wire of the type found in the 9th- through 11th-century Viking hoards in England and Scotland (discussed in a preceding post) and at other Viking sites, has also been found in 9th-century CE Irish hoards of altar vessels. Two such objects are of particular interest. The Derrynaflan Paten is decorated around its circumference with three knitted tubes (seen in greater detail here).

The tubes appear to consist of shorter segments with slightly different appearances (and perhaps structures) joined together. One of the alternating elements was created by a gently spiraling band of silver wrapped tightly enough around the tube to press into it, forming a secondary decoration.

The paten is described in great detail by Michael Ryan in The Derrynaflan Hoard and Early Irish Art, published in the October 1997 issue of Speculum. He notes that the knitting around its outer circumference is soft enough to risk being deformed during normal handling (for which reason the hoard includes a separate support for the paten). He also states that “nothing later than the ninth century occurs in the find” but does not provide a more specific date for the paten.

It is currently in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland, which dates it to the 8th century, together with the more widely known Ardagh Chalice. On the basis of the shared intricacy of their decorative detail, the museum believes that both can have been made in the same workshop, which was presumably near the sites where they were recovered. Unlike the jewelry found at the Viking sites, where the knitting was the centerpiece, the Irish knitting considered here was a decorative component of larger elaborate objects that would in all likelihood have been commissioned by the churches where they were found.

The following detail from one of the two strips of knitting on the chalice shows the same compound structure as that seen on the Viking and Egyptian knitted tubes. It is formed by alternating rows of different-colored wires worked over each other. This is placed alongside plain open-loop knitting. The most noteworthy difference between the knitting on the chalice and all the other early knitting examined here thus far is that it was worked flat.

This upsets the established notion of knitting first having arrived in Europe at some time after 1000 CE, from its Egyptian origin, via Islamic Spain. There is convincing evidence of knitting in yarn having traversed that path, nonetheless, but knitting in wire was well established in northern Europe by the time it did.

There is no way to determine if the contemporaneous appearance of tubular knitting in Egypt and the northern European sites is coincidental, or provides yet another indication of cultural exchange between those communities. (Ryan includes a footnoted reference to the silver used for decorating Viking objects seeming “to have been derived in the main from Islamic dirhams with inscriptions in Kufic characters…brought along Viking trade routes to the East.”) Similarly, there is no way to tell if the Vikings introduced the craft to Ireland or picked it up there — assuming that’s the way it happened, at all.

The knitting found at all sites displays the same fundamental structure. The yarn used in the one region and the wire used in the other can be knitted with the same tools, although the working properties of the respective materials make some implements and methods better suited to the one than the other.

The Ardagh Chalice was examined in minute detail by the Conservation Laboratory at the British Museum during the late 1960s. A report about it was presented by Robert Organ at a seminar on the Application of science in examination of works of art, in 1970. This report was included in the published proceedings of the seminar three years later, titled Examination of the Ardagh Chalice — A Case History.

The preceding photograph shows a detail of one of the decorative elements on the chalice presented in that report. It is the less complex of the two strips of knitted wire. The other is significantly more intricate, with an additional structure woven into the knitting and the legs of some of the knitted stitches tracing an elaborate path through the work. This parallels the secondary device worked into half of the knitting on the Derrynaflan Paten. I’ll return to it when I feel surer about my ability to provide an accurate description. Puzzling that out will likely reveal more about the method of production, the basics of which I intend to discuss next.

When I blogged about the Cuerdale Hoard yesterday, I had no expectation of seeing it right under my nose today. In the interim, I had visited the Gold Room at the Swedish History Museum, which is as close to an encyclopedic exhibition of Viking metal art as can be. There was a tubular silver chain there that appeared to be twisted-stitch knitting. This got me thinking about the extent to which pulling the tube through a drawplate to reduce its size and even out its surface (a normal step in this form of wirework) might alter the appearance of the knitted structure. The force of that action can shift the position of the legs of the stitches, potentially both giving twisted-stitch knitting a flatter appearance and open-stitch knitting a crossed appearance. I’ll explain the technical and structural nuance of all this in another post.

Anyway — when I was again confronting an overwhelming amount of material, today, all I had at hand was a cellphone for dealing with an unanticipated photo op that deserved more appropriate equipment. I’ll be better prepared next time, but here is one shot of the knitted tube yesterday’s post includes a drawing of, showing it from the other side.

I obviously knew that I’d be traveling to the British Museum this morning but was doing so for an unrelated bit of loopery — another tale to be told — and was surprised to see material from the Cuerdale Hoard on display. To my greater embarrassment, although I knew that at least some of it was in the museum’s collections, I hadn’t checked beforehand if anything was on exhibit, to say nothing of it jogging a memory of having seen the display on an earlier visit without registering its significance.

Knitted tubes in Viking hoards

One of the largest hoards of Viking silver ever found was deposited in Cuerdale, England, during the first five years of the 10th century CE. It was discovered in 1840 and Edward Hawkins published An Account of Coins and Treasure Found in Cuerdale in two issues of the 1847 volume of The Archaeological Journal. The first includes illustrated descriptions of a number of silver chains, to which he then adds the following object.

“Fig. 84 is probably a portion of an armlet, in the collection of Mr. Assheton, and may be included among the chains; it is composed of fine wire knitted precisely in the same manner as a modern stocking; it is hollow, so that a large pencil may be easily passed within it; one end is inserted into a flat piece of silver, bent, the side riveted together, to contain the silver ring by which the two ends were united to fix it upon the arm.”

Hawkins makes a series of general remarks about the wire objects in the second part of the article.

“The wires of smaller diameter, scarcely larger than a hair…[were used]…in the production of several useful and elegant ornaments…The article 84 is produced from one continuous wire knitted precisely as a modern stocking is made, as will be perceived by examining the forms of the stitches both on the inside and the outside.”

A similar item was found in the Croy hoard near Inverness in Scotland, dating from some time not long after 820 CE. Joseph Anderson, the Keeper of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, published a Notice of a Find of Silver Ornaments, &c, at Croy, Inverness-shire now Presented to the Museum in the 1876 volume of the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. This includes a description of a 6 inch long silver chain (also shown in a recent photograph taken by the museum).

“The Band of Knitted Work of fine Silver Wire, knitted with the ordinary knitting stitch, resembles the modern Trichinopoly work, and connects this find with those of Cuerdale and Largo, in both of which similarly knitted bands of silver-wire occurred.”

Anderson uses similar terms to describe yet another chain found at a 10th-century Viking burial site at Ballinaby, on the Scottish island of Islay. This was first presented as a lecture in 1881 and published two years later in Scotland in Pagan Times: The Iron Age.

“The chain of silver wire is an object of very peculiar character but its relations are not difficult to establish. A portion of a similar chain occurred in the Croy find; also in the Skaill hoard, to be subsequently described; in the hoard at Cuerdale; and in a small hoard found in the Isle of Inchkenneth. Its total length is 16 inches, and its width is ¼ inch. It is formed of silver wire of the fineness of sewing thread, knitted as a hollow tube, with the common knitting-stitch used in knitting stockings. The knots at the ends of the tube are produced separately and fastened on.”

This chain and the one from the Croy find were examined in 1978 by Helen Bennett of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (whom we met previously in the discussion of how nålebinding became nalbinding). The results were communicated privately to Braham Norwick who was preparing an article titled The Origins of Knitted Fabric, published in 1980, including a photograph of the Ballinaby chain and Bennett’s report, which states:.

“I find them to be of identical looped structure, made from long lengths of wire, which at first sight strongly resembles stocking stitch. Both are in the form of flattened tubes, that from Croy having 16 ‘stitches’ per round (7 stitches and 6 rows per cm) and that from Ballinaby having 6 ‘stitches’ per round (6-2/3 ‘stitches’ and 7-1/2 rows per cm). Although the fabrics strong­ly resemble knitting, on examining them under the microscope I found the structure to be different. Whereas in knitting the loops are usually drawn through those of the preceding row, in these cases the loops have been drawn through the two preceding rows.”

The final sentence defines compound knitting, which can also be described as two overlapping systems of stocking stitch worked into the same fabric. It is the same structure as that of the Egyptian knitted tubes described in a previous post.compound-knitting-structure

It is puzzling that Bennett regards this as being something other than knitting. In his book from 1987, Richard Rutt — who cites both her and Norwick extensively — goes beyond that and categorically excludes all of the wirework they described (including additional flat-knitted material) from the realm of knitting.

“…as Helen Bennett points out, the method by which they were made is far from clear. Recognizing their knitted structure does not give them a place in the history of hand knitting, unless some direct connection can be shown between the techniques of bending metal and of manipulating yarn.”

It didn’t take long before he reconsidered this. In correspondence with the editor of Piecework Magazine in 1990 (published in its Jan.-Feb. 2017 issue) about an article he had recently prepared where the compound knitted structure was described in detail (Knitted Fabrics from China, 3rd Century BC; more about this in a separate post), he says:

“I went on from that to have another look at the Celtic pieces which have knitted silver in them and discovered that the Celtic work was done with a knitting nancy. Complex knitting is much easier on a knitting nancy than it is on knitting needles.”

Knitting Nancy (aka knitting spool) is a common designation for a smaller form of peg loom normally associated with i-cord, although Rutt appears to be using it as a general name for knitting looms regardless of size. I will discuss them together with other methods for the tubular knitting of both yarn and wire in a later post. But first, I want to look at the flat knitting from 8th- or 9th-century Ireland mentioned parenthetically above.

Nalbinding: stitch structures

Margrethe Hald’s definition of nålebinding presented in the preceding post was intended to describe older textiles of Scandinavian origin. It covers a number of stitches that are named for the location where the earliest exemplar was found, or for a person with whom the stitch is strongly associated, all with predominantly Nordic representation.

Nålebinding is quite an apt term for a craft that is so strongly associated with the Nordic countries. There has, however, been some debate about it being equally appropriate as a generic designation for forms of looping with structural characteristics that don’t conform to Hald’s definition, or appear in a diverse array of craft traditions that have no particular tie to Scandinavia.

These structures include simple looping (aka buttonhole), loop-and-twist and cross-knit looping, which are frequently regarded as part of the nalbinding repertoire without being in any way specific to it. They can, and often are, made by other means other than leading the end of the working material through the burgeoning fabric with an eyed needle.

Regardless of how they are produced, these forms of looping differ from Hald’s nålebinding in a fundamental structural regard. By her definition, a stitch made by nålebinding is worked both into one or more loops in the corresponding stitch in the preceding row, and laterally into adjacent loops in the same row. With the other forms, the connection is with the preceding row only. (This is precisely the same structural detail that distinguishes crochet from knitting.)

Cross-knit looping, in particular, has a number of properties that differ from doubly interconnected nålebinding. For example, one of the salient characteristics of the latter is that its stitches don’t unravel when the fabric is cut, or the end of the yarn is pulled backward though and unsecured stitch. However, cross-knit looping unravels just as knitting does. Cross-knit looping can also be produced in different ways, of which nålebinding is one, and knitting either with needles or on a peg loom are others. The applied technique cannot be determined by examining the basic structure of a piece of fabric and can, at best, be ascertained by the presence of secondary characteristics that are specific to a single candidate technique.

There is no reason for practitioners to regard this as problematic. The tutorial literature distinguishes between simple and compound stitches, and generally categorizes them as Hansen does, by the path the working material takes laterally through the loops and the type of interconnection with the preceding row. Comparative research, on the other hand, often requires the description of fabric structures separately from the crafts in which they appear. If for no other reason, this is to avoid the conflation of structurally similar crafts that arose independently at widely separated times and places.

This is why so many generic designations for this form of looping have been put forward in scholarly contexts: looped needle-netting, knotless netting, one-needle knitting, etc. However, there has never been any general agreement about a single preferred term. My own initial preference was the straightforward translation ‘needlebinding’ and I’ve never quite understood why it failed to gain traction. I abandoned it after a discussion with someone with expert understanding of closely related crafts who clearly had no idea what I was talking about until I starting calling it nalbinding, at which point comprehension was instant.

Irene Emery, whose book The Primary Structures of Fabrics has been regularly cited in this blog, adopted Hald’s definition for her own preferred generic term ‘interconnected looping’ (with ‘single interconnected looping’ being the closest specific match to Hald’s ‘looped needle-netting’) and then strongly criticizes one pre-existing suggestion.

“…the expression knotless netting is hard to justify because knotless netting is used as a general term for a somewhat indefinite group of structures of undefined characteristics and only remotely related to the general concept of netting.”

And then another:

“Needleknitting is one of the terms ‘coined’ to express the idea of a fabric that is not really knitting although it looks like it. The term has been widely used in English publications on Peru in spite of many objections to it… Needleknitting is a term which non-specialists find particularly misleading and confusing. It is used to designate the cross-knit structure in whatever form it occurs in Peruvian fabrics.”

Emery does not use the term nålebinding in any of its alternative spellings but parenthetically notes that looped needle-netting is called vantsöm (lit. ‘mitten stitch’) in Swedish. It is the only time she uses a foreign term to designate a looped structure. It is included in Hald’s definition, to which Emery closely adheres, but reclassified and rephrased to fit into her broader framework. This suggests that she regarded its Scandinavian aspect to be worth retaining.

The term was carried forward by Annemarie Seiler-Baldinger in her book Textiles: a Classification of Techniques, which is a frequently cited complement or alternative to Emery, especially where a purely structural perspective is insufficient. The 1994 edition includes the following category.

“Pierced interconnected looping:  As in simple pierced looping the thread is also drawn through the loop of the preceding row in the interconnected version. The more distant the loops which are interconnected, the more complex the structure becomes. These methods are known collectively as ‘Vantsöm.’”

Seiler-Baldinger then lists terms used for this by other authors, including nålebinding. Given how firmly established that term had become in the craft literature by 1994, Selier-Baldinger placing it subordinately to vantsöm seems noteworthy, although she may simply have been maintaining consistency with Emery and Hald. In any case, vantsöm figures prominently in early–20th-century Swedish writing and remains a key theme in recent descriptions of the craft’s history.

Crochet and the compound form of nalbinding can both be characterized by a looped structure that is linked in two directions; an individual loop is attached to a loop in the preceding row and to the adjacent loop in the same row. In contrast, knitting is linked to the preceding row only. Chain stitches are also linked in only one direction and it is debatable if chain stitching by itself should be categorized as crochet (even when produced with a crochet hook). By Irene Emery’s definition it is not. There are also two opinions about whether nalbinding, in addition to its compound (doubly-linked) form, includes the simple (singly-linked) looping that we’ve already seen and the cross-knit looping presented below.

Such distinctions are of fundamental concern when devising classification systems but may be less important to practitioners, who are more interested in their craft being defined with a scope that embraces the full range of techniques they regard it to include. Simple- and cross-knit looping appear in a large number of different crafts. Describing them in terms that balance the varying procedural and systematic perspectives that otherwise attach to those crafts can therefore present a significant challenge. In further preparation for addressing it, here is the second of the two variations of the simple loop described by Emery.

VARIATION: Cross-knit loops

“Cross-knit looping differs from simple (buttonhole) looping chiefly in the fact that the loop is taken round the crossing of a loop in the previous row rather than over the lag between loops.

This means that the loops, instead of alternating in position in successive rows … are aligned vertically and produce marked vertical ribbing on one face of the fabric … more accurately identified with the appearance of crossed knitting. Although the methods of construction are quite different the resulting structures are frequently identical and there is seldom anything in the fabric to determine which process has been used.”

Looping in chains

The discussion of the simple loop has thus far presented it as a component of a larger structure. I’ve been using the definitions of its various forms provided by Irene Emery and expect to be citing her a while longer. Before getting back into that sequence, there is one fundamental transform of the basic loop that she only illustrates in composite structures, which I first want to consider on its own.

A string twisted into a series of loops is not a stable structure. The loops vanish when the string is placed under even the slightest tension unless they are provided with some form of support. In simple looping this is given by wrapping the individual loops vertically around the “lag” between the nearest two loops in the preceding round, or to an anchor provided specifically for the initial round.

Another way to preserve the loops is to connect them laterally to each with the ends of the string passing entirely through the first and last loops. Pulling the ends of the string in opposite directions will now tighten the outermost two loops into knots but the others will remain in an open chain. (The loops in it can be kept at a uniform size by deliberately tightening the end knots before applying any tension.) A well-known, although far from the only application of such chains is in crochet, where they serve both as a foundation for other stitching and as discrete elements in openwork.

Another craft that shares this attribute is nalbinding, about which Emery says essentially nothing. Given its significance in the history of fabric — which had not been fully appreciated at the time she was writing — this blog will examine it all the more closely.

Since three of the remaining purses in the 1823 volume of Penélopé for which I’ve promised instructions are crocheted, I’ll post their translations before moving on. But the loom-knitted purses described in the preceding entries employ another important variation of simple looping — cross-knit looping — and the next post will address that.

Loop-and-twist

Irene Emery describes two variations of the simple looping that was discussed in the preceding post. The first is immediately applicable to purse making on a cup mold and is seen in extant looped purses. (The second variation is also relevant to the knitting loom and will be considered separately with that implement.)

VARIATION: Loop-and-twist

The mesh is somewhat elongated and the stitch made firmer when the simple loop is elaborated by the addition of one or more turns of the element about itself. This is usually referred to as loop-and-twist (if there is more than one twist the number can be stated), occasionally as twisted loop or twisted buttonhole stitch, or differentiated as having a ‘full turn.’ In lace-making it has a variety of other names.

Rather than illustrate this with Emery’s photograph, here is the structure as seen in the chapter on needle lace in Beeton’s Book of Needlework from 1870 where it is termed Point d’Espagne (Spanish stitch):

with a third variant — Close Spanish Stitch — all appearing in the Dutch purses:

The single Spanish stitch is twisted once and each of the stitches in the triple and close forms are twisted three times, despite the accompanying text stating all are “worked in exactly the same way.” Beeton also illustrates a simple looped stitch but gives it the separate name, Point de Bruxelles (Brussels lace stitch). However, the Brussels stitch appears by that name in other illustrations where it is twisted.

No latitude for modification appears in the instructions for the first of the Louisiana purses from 1823 but those for the second pattern describe adjustments to the stitch count to accommodate thread size, and the third has implicit need to allow for beading. Regardless of any elective twisting (which the Beeton’s illustrations suggest was applied as desired without separate note), the tripling of the stitches in the first pattern produces a filet mesh of the same basic form as is illustrated here. The height of the open spaces relative to their width is determined by the number of twists.

The second and third Louisiana purses are made with the close stitch, which Beeton says should be worked “so closely as to allow only the needle to pass through in the next row.” If the first purse is seen as intrinsically openwork, the second and third are closed work. The last two share the same basic pattern but the third also includes beads. Twisting is an obvious means for balancing the loops adjacent to a bead with the shape of that bead, where they are not closely matched. If the loop is already larger, multiple beads can be stacked but twisting may still be beneficial. It is a nimbler expedient in any case, than is restricting the selection of beads.

Finally, although the stitch patterns illustrated above are all directly relevant to the purses, they show needle lace being worked back and forth in rows, with the direction of the twist alternating in each. The purses are worked in the round and all twisting is in the same direction.

Simple looping

Before looking at the two additional forms of looping in the instructions for the Louisiana purse from 1823 (see the preceding post) let’s consider the underlying structure independently of that craft. Irene Emery gives the following illustrated definition in the chapter on “Single Element” structures in The Primary Structures of Fabrics from 1966.

Looping

A complete loop is formed (and will be retained in the fabric) if the element crosses over itself as it moves on to form the next loop.

Loop: a doubling of a cord or thread back on itself so as to leave an opening between the parts through which another cord or thread may pass.

SIMPLE LOOPS

Simple looping is built up by means of the stitch on which most of the looped stitches used in sewing, netting, and lace-making are based. The stitch is known in sewing and in lace-making as buttonhole stitch, in rope work as half hitch. Of the countless terms used in one context or another to designate the resulting fabric structure, simple looping is the most widely used, buttonhole looping, fairly common.

The use of the structure is so widespread chronologically and geographically that it is hardly an exaggeration to call it universal, and it ranges in application all the way from heavy rope fender covering and sturdy carrying nets to delicate, decorative laces. It is the basic stitch of the needlepoint laces; it is used extensively for loose net-like structures and for firm close-worked, cloth-like fabrics.

I’ve translated the festonneerstek (lit. festoon stitch) prescribed in the 1823 Dutch instructions as a “simple looped stitch” (resisting a strong inclination to call it an “e-loop” — a term that reflects the similarity between the cursive lower case form of that letter and the shape of the loop — familiar to loom knitters but not established elsewhere in the craft glossary). The festoon stitch also appears in instructions for looped wirework in the 1822 volume of Penélopé, accompanied by illustrations that confirm it to be the simple looped stitch shown above. Emery also describes a variation of it that is seen in extant purses from the 17th- and 18th centuries. This will be detailed in the next post.
